What is the mission of Franciscan Servants for Mental Health?
Our mission is to be a model caregiving facility that offers informative, educative, and preventive care for mental illness through a holistic approach of Prayer, Work, and Therapy. We aim to restore human dignity and provide a "culture of community" for those often rejected by society.
Who founded the organization and why?
The organization was founded by Sr. Itaclaria Ndumi Thomas after 20 years of social work and missionary practice. She recognized that a lack of peace, love, and social support leads to depression and addiction, and she responded to Pope Francis’s call to end the stigma surrounding mental health.
Is this a registered organization?
Yes. We are a registered Non-Profit Charitable Organization under registration number DSD/17/86/02/23423.
What does "Work Therapy" involve?
We believe an idle mind is vulnerable. Our residents engage in creative and productive activities including:
Arts & Crafts: Rosary making, bead-work, and soap making.
Textiles: Sewing, basket weaving, embroidery, and cloth weaving.
Agriculture: Chicken and rabbit farming, and gardening.
How can I donate to the foundation?
You can support our mission through the following channels:
M-Pesa: 0706473203
Paybill: 303030 | Account No: 4994#
Bank: ABSA BANK, Account No: 2052698149
Can I buy the products made by the residents?
Yes! We sell the baskets, carpets, rosaries, and farm produce (meat and vegetables) created at the center. The proceeds go directly toward the residents' economic gain and the center's sustainability.
Where is the project located?
We are situated at St. Joseph Catholic Parish Mbuvo, approximately 100 meters from Mbuvo Secondary School.
